Walk into any liquor store, bar, or trendy restaurant in 2026, and you'll see something that didn't exist a decade ago: a growing section of beverages infused with THC. Infused drinks have officially entered the mainstream, and the category is exploding.
But what exactly is a THC drink? How do they work? How do they compare to traditional edibles or alcohol? And how do you choose the right one? This is the complete guide to the world of THC-infused beverages — written by Artet, the brand that pioneered the THC spirit category back in 2019.
What Is a THC Drink?
A THC drink is exactly what it sounds like: a beverage infused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These drinks come in dozens of formats — sparkling seltzers, ready-to-drink cocktails, spirits, tonics, shots, and more — but they all share one defining feature: instead of (or in addition to) alcohol, they deliver a controlled dose of THC.
The category exists because of two converging trends. First, the legalization of hemp-derived Delta-9 THC under the 2018 Farm Bill made it possible to ship THC beverages across most of the United States. Second, a growing movement away from alcohol — driven by Gen Z, millennials, and the broader wellness conversation — created demand for sophisticated alcohol alternatives that still deliver a real buzz.
THC drinks fill that gap. They offer the ritual of cocktail culture, the social ease of having something in your hand, and a pleasant psychoactive experience — all without the hangover.
Are THC Drinks Non-Alcoholic?
Yes — THC drinks are completely non-alcoholic. The category has grown because it gives you the social ritual and gentle buzz of a cocktail without the alcohol, the hangover, or the morning-after regret. The Main Types of THC Drinks
The THC beverage market has grown into a real category with distinct formats, each serving a different drinking occasion. Here's how to think about them.
THC Seltzers
The most common entry point into the category. THC seltzers are light, fizzy, and usually flavored with fruit essences or syrups. They're modeled after popular alcoholic seltzers like White Claw, Truly, and Ranch Water — but with hemp-derived THC instead of alcohol. Most clock in around 5mg of THC per can and emphasize crispness and sessionability over flavor complexity.
Best for: casual drinkers who want something simple and refreshing.
THC Spritzes
One step up from a seltzer. THC spritzes are made with real fruit juices, botanical extracts, and tonics — closer to a canned cocktail than a flavored seltzer. They're full-bodied, more complex, and designed for people who actually care what their drink tastes like. Artet makes four flavors of THC spritz: Chamomile Lemon, Grapefruit Rosemary, Mango Ginger, and Strawberry Basil — each with 5mg THC + 5mg CBD per can.
Best for: drinkers who want flavor and complexity without leaving the can.
THC Spirits
The newest and most ambitious format. THC spirits are full-format infused liquors that function as the base of cocktails — like the gin in a Gin & Tonic, but non-alcoholic and infused with THC. Artet's Flagship Aperitif launched in 2019 as the first 750ml THC spirit, and the format has since expanded to include extra strength versions, single-serve mini bottles, and other amaro and aperitif-style drinks.
Best for: cocktail makers, mixology enthusiasts, and anyone building a non-alcoholic bar cart.
THC Shots
Small, high-potency formats designed for fast onset and convenience. Usually 1-2 oz with anywhere from 5-25mg of THC. Often used as a "boost" added to other drinks rather than consumed alone.
Best for: experienced THC drinkers who want a quick, portable option.
How Do THC Drinks Work?
The biggest difference between THC drinks and food-based edibles is speed. Drinks typically take 15-30 minutes to take effect, edibles 60-120 minutes — thanks to a process called nano-emulsification that absorbs THC much faster through the mouth, throat, and stomach. We break down the timing in how long THC drinks take to kick in and the science of edibles versus drinks in THC drinks vs. edibles.
How Much THC Should I Drink?
This depends entirely on your tolerance, body chemistry, and what kind of experience you're after. If you're new to THC drinks, here's the general framework:
- 2.5mg: A starter dose. Subtle, gentle, and easy to control. Most beginners feel something but stay clearheaded.
- 5mg: A standard social dose. Noticeable buzz, comparable to a glass of wine.
- 10mg: A stronger experience. Recommended only for drinkers who've established their tolerance.
- 15mg+: For experienced THC drinkers.
Start low, wait 30 minutes to assess, and adjust from there. The golden rule of THC drinks for beginners is the same as the rule for any new substance: you can always have more, but you can't have less.
For Artet specifically, our Flagship Aperitif contains 2.5mg of THC per 50ml pour, our Extra Strength Aperitif contains 5mg per pour, and each spritz can contains 5mg THC + 5mg CBD. Every bottle comes with a stainless steel dosing cap so you can track your intake to the milligram.
Are THC Drinks Legal?
Yes — with caveats. Hemp-derived Delta-9 THC beverages (the kind Artet ships) are federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, which permits products containing less than 0.3% THC by dry weight. This is the legal framework that allows Artet and most other THC drink brands to ship to over 35 U.S. states.
However, individual states have started passing their own restrictions. At the time of writing, Artet cannot ship to: CA, CO, HI, ID, KS, MA, ME, MT, NV, OR, WA, UT, VT, WY. The list changes as legislation evolves.
If you live in a state where direct-to-consumer shipping isn't allowed, you can still likely buy Artet at a local liquor store, bar, or restaurant. Use our store locator to find a retailer near you.
Where to Buy THC Drinks
There are three main ways to get your hands on quality THC drinks:
Online direct-to-consumer: The easiest option in most states. Brands like Artet ship hemp-derived THC drinks directly to your door. Shop the full Artet lineup here.
Liquor stores, bars, and restaurants: THC drinks are increasingly stocked alongside alcoholic options. Look for them in the non-alcoholic section, near craft cocktails, or behind the bar.
Dispensaries: In states with legal recreational programs (like California and Colorado), full-strength THC drinks are sold in licensed retail locations. These typically contain higher THC doses than hemp-derived products.
How to Drink THC Drinks
The format dictates the approach. Spritzes and seltzers are ready to drink — crack one open over ice, and you're set. Spirits and aperitifs are more versatile.
You can sip Artet's aperitif on the rocks, top it with tonic or sparkling water for a simple highball, or use it as the base of a more elaborate cocktail. Our recipe library includes 20+ THC cocktails — everything from a THC Negroni to a THC Old Fashioned to a THC matcha cocktail for brunch.

The Best THC Drinks for Beginners

Why Artet?
Artet was founded in 2019 by two brothers and a cousin who wanted to bring THC out of the dresser drawer and onto the dinner table. We launched the first-ever THC aperitif in a 750ml format, helping create the THC spirit category that now spans dozens of brands.
Our drinks are inspired by Italian aperitivo culture and built on a foundation of eight botanicals: cardamom, allspice, ginger, chamomile, gentian, juniper, grapefruit, and Delta-9 THC. The result is a beverage that drinks like a real cocktail — complex, layered, and built to be sipped — with a clean, controllable THC experience.
Whether you're looking to cut back on alcohol, explore a new kind of cocktail, or just have a better relationship with how you unwind, we hope you'll give the original THC aperitif a try.
Cheers, and as always, keep your spirits high.
